The Lost Tribe Experience

From 1773 to 1842 there has been documentation of sightings of scattered members of the so called Lost Tribe in Fiordland. 

These where members of the Ngati Mamoe and Waitaha in exile assimilation by the Kai Tahu Tribe lived in secret places of the Shadowlands that is now Fiordland National Park. 

Artifacts and stories about human remains, foot prints and the voices of the Glasinoch persisted into the early 20th Century even sparking a Novel and a Motion Picture. 

Most probably the end of the story happened at the headwaters of the Wild Natives River where a skirmish with the Ngai Tahu took place near a lake at the headwaters of the Taheke Stream deep in what is now called Wapiti Country. 

 In later years artifacts where found in rock shelters in the area. 

Sadly the only images of this time are from the imagination of folkore and artists.

Pisgah Rock Bivvy: Fiordland National Park

 The Pisgah Rock Bivouac is a classic bush bivvy up the Doon River Valley just below the Pisgah Stream Junction  Between the Murchison Mountains and the Stuart Mountains of Lake Te Anau. Mount Pisgah was so named after a biblical mountain from which Moses was said to have seen the promise land.

The Pisgah Shelter is some 6 kms North North West of The Junction Burn Hut at the South West Arm of the Middle Fiord of Lake Te Anau.  

GILL'S ROCK BIVOUAC FIORDLAND NATIONAL PARK NZ

                             GILL'S ROCK BIVOUAC LAKE ADELAIDE FIORDLAND

In the Scrub at the western end of Lake Adelaide high in the Darran Mountains is a legendary rock shelter  under a large stone slab called Gill's Bivvy.... It is well off the tourist trail but is known the more adventure inclined.. Not to be confused with Phil's Bivvy higher up the slopes of Barrier Knob.

Wilson's Landing - The Hidden Lakes- Lake Te Anau

 This was the original Te Anau Day Trip destination before the  discovery of the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves,  Thanks to Wilson Campbell and Company. Fiordland Explorers. That involved a short Boat Trip on the Larger of the Hidden Lakes and a spectacular View Point and a pick up at Mussel Cove. 

Tony Ciaffoni's Landing - Lake Te Anau NZ

 So called because of Toni Ciaffoni an engineer on the Fiordland Trails Trust.

Also an important construction access point for the lake-shore cycle trail construction. 

and fishermen's vehicle track.

Name inspired by a 1960s children's bedtime book,  Campbell's Kingdom was also inspired by a 1960s Book.

Also a popular helicopter tourism landing spot.
 

Lake Pahoe Te Anau NZ

Its not an ordinary street, its got a lake in it... Yes New Zealand has it's own Lake Pahoe just like the one in Monty Pythons Flying Circus TV series, in the township of Te Anau.

Its a resting place on the popular shoreline cycleway / walkway on the edge of the much bigger Lake Te Anau. (not to be confused with sister lake, Lake Pehoé Chile)

Devil's Plug Hole - Fiordland NZ

Just off the remote Borland Road in Fiordland National Park is the site of a massive pre historic Mega Landslide, most probably a result of a massive earthquake is a mysterious lake..

Sitting at the bottom of one of NZs deepest natural depressions.. not yet measured by science it drains through underground outlets it has the appearance of a gigantic plughole.

Experienced bush walkers can get to the Lake by bush bashing from near by trails but its best to visit by helicopter from the Manapouri Airport as the ground in this region can be unpredictable..

Deer Park Heights Queenstown NZ

Originally a Tourist wildlife experience from the 1960s the Deer Park Heights was closed to the public in 2009 but is still a mecca for picture shoots in the Queenstown Area.

Used for movies like Disney's The Rescue, George Lucas's The Willow, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and more recently Disney's Pete's Dragon remake as well as other lesser known productions.

Lord of the Rings Tourists are still allowed landings on the famous tarn area as part of the local helicopter tour itinerary.

Shotover River Oxenbridge Tunnel NZ

Years ago an effort was made to divert the Shotover River in order to mine the river bed for Gold.

The Oxenbridge Tunnel was not a financial success but it remains a monument to the hardy men of the past who toiled in search of riches. 

The Tunnel today is now a point of interest to curious tourists and rafting enthusiasts.

To get there follow the Oxenbridge Tunnel Road from Arthur's Point Village.

Taieri River Tunnel walk Hyde NZ

Back in the gold mining days a diversion tunnel was hand built on a sharp bend of the Upper Taieri River near the town of Hyde on the Central Otago Rail Trail.

The Tunnel Walk is a short track off the main Rail Trail just south of the Hyde Viaduct.

A little known landmark it is popular with rafting enthusiasts and history buffs and some photographers.

Palmerston Puketapu Summit Walkway

Anyone passing through the small town of Palmerston will notice a ancient volcanic cone with a grey stone tower overlooking the main street. If you have time and fitness you can climb up the summit thanks to walkway access NZ and visit the monument to agricultural visionary Sir John McKenzie.

The track is on private land so be respectful and thankful while visiting.

Edmund Halley Falls Fiordland NZ

Away in the Iris Burn Valley above the famous Kepler Track is a high "comet like" waterfall

in a Mountain Range that was inspired by Astronomers Sir Edmund Halley is right at home.
Like the comet of the same name the falls only put on a spectacular show under certain conditions.

Tiwai Bridge Wetland Cycleway (proposed)

One special place where people can explore the wilds of Bluff Harbour is the area between Joey's Island and the Tiwai Bridge across Awarua Bay.

Some 20 years ago there was a plan drawn up for a nature walkway for a trip back into a rare Southland  Landscape from before the arrival of modern times.

Tautuku Catlins Area

A Special Walking / Photography Area in the Catlins on  NZs Southern Coast including

Beach Walks, Sea Caves, Forest Walks, Historic Sites, Maori Settlements and Geographic Costal Formations.

Boultbee Island - Milford Sound

Surreptitiously named by after an 19th Century rambler and explorer  John Boultbee who spent time in Milford Sound in 1826 with sealing crews.
This is the Largest Island in the Milford Sound Area and is set aside for wildlife and recreation by the National Parks Act.

Boultbee Island because of it's size and position but it is a favorite place for small boat recreation and bird watchers wanting to explore the lesser seen parts of Milford Sound.
